training my GSP pup

Could someone give me some guidance regarding training my new charge. Training dogs is something im pretty new at. What age should i start to train him for the field at? and what should i be getting him to do? im sounding like a right novice here (and i am) but im wanting to do it right, not just bumble along and end up with a dog doing what it wants when it wants.

He is 12 weeks or so at the moment and he is retrieving tennis balls-thats it. Should i be trying the sit, stay commands etc now or leave it?

im in the middle of reading GUNDOGS ....training and field trials by P.R.A MOXON

seems a good book and covers spaniels/retrievers and pointers from basic training to getting them ready for work

Hi Trappa, ive got a book on pointers by George wallace, its very good, planning on a GSP myself to work with the Birds and the Gun and this book covers it all, do you have any pics of your pup?

can i just say one thing, its just a preferance but i was told by the breeder of my GWP X not to bother with the stay command, simply using the sit command will suffice, it makes sence really if the dogs sitting he aint goin to move and also why spend time on a two comaands when just one does both?
